HALLOWEEN, FULL BLUE MOON + SAMHAIN
Holidays always come with a bit of anxiety for me. How do we create an authentic experience and tradition for our family while not giving in to capitalistic consumerism that so many of our American holidays encompass? This Halloween we decided to encompass ritual from the Samhain tradition which really brought out all of the magical feels and connection we’ve been craving. Pandemic worries aside, it was a day to remember.
We took the kids to my parent’s house to go to a few neighbor homes for some trick or treating. Typically our community all migrates to one main street in town for a big trick or treating party but this year had to look a little different for everyone.
At home we made up a lunar infusion to place under the full blue moon and started a fire in the fire pit. The kid’s ran around in their costumes and snuggled up in blankets when the sun went down. We set up an alter with our lunar tea, some photos of loved ones lost, an antler shed we found in the fire pit and some sage from my grandparent’s yard.
I was hesitant to make our alter at first because we didn’t have pictures of everyone we wanted to include but I feel good about showing up imperfectly rather than not doing it at all. We can build on it every year and I truly feel this is how our family traditions will form. May you embrace the change of seasons, may you light a candle inside you as the days turn darker. Happy Halloween, Full Blue Moon and Samhain from our Homestead to Yours.
