Did you know that the amount of water used to produce one pair of denim jeans using conventional practices is equivalent to what one person can drink over seven years? That’s right, seven years. Take a minute to think about all of the denim you have in your wardrobe and then how much water was used to produce them.

I recently learned of a small company that has created the first ever waterless denim dying process. Tejidos Royo is a 100 year old Spanish clothing company whose mission is completely dedicated to sustainability and has developed DryIndigo® a revolutionary waterless dyeing process, drastically minimizing their environmental impact. Their mission is to to guide the textile industry towards a new era of sustainability through their innovative practices with DryIndigo® being at the heart of this strategy and is estimated to have saved over one million liters of water just over the last year of dying denim.

When comparing Dry Indigo® vs traditional techniques, Dry Indigo® uses 100% less water for Dyeing, 89% less chemicals, 65% reduced energy usage, and zero water discharge.

To celebrate their sustainability efforts Tejidos Royo launched a ‘One Million Liters’ initiative and will give away 1 Million Liters of water that the dry dying will save to a social project proposed by users from all over the world. To kick off the initiative, their initial donation of 1 million liters of water will go to UNICEF. You can join the Denim Revolution and go to the ‘One Million Liters’ website to share a favorite cause or organization that you would like to see benefit from this incredible initiative and/or follow on instragram via @tejidosroyo and @onemillionliters.
