SEASONAL PLANTING— WHAT TO PLANT IN AUTUMN.

The season of Autumn is so connected to the harvest. A magical time to celebrate the fruits of our labor and begin to release ourselves from the busyness that Summer always brings. Though we don’t often think of Fall as a time for planting, it can be quite a productive and fulfilling time to introduce new plants into your space.

This Fall we filled the empty spaces in our garden with sedums, cone flowers, rabbit brush and other shrubs that bloom later in the year to compliment the irises that bloom in the spring and sunflowers and hollyhock that bloom in the Summer. We picked a cool, cloudy day to plant and were even blessed with a little rain which the plants loved. We are slowly learning that with some intentional planting it’s possible to have beautiful blooms for three complete seasons, even in our harsh climate here in Montana.

Let us not forgot about the bulbs! We plant tulip, daffodil, and lily bulbs around the chicken coop and garlic in the raised beds. There is nothing better than seeing those flowers sprout out of the ground after a long, cold winter.
